Pravdepodobne prvé, čo väčšinu ľudí napadne pri slovnom spojení taliansky metal je práve kapela RHAPSODY OF FIRE, ktorá pred nedávnom vydala novinku Challenge the Wind. Nám sa podarilo vyspovedať spoluzakladateľa a aktuálne jediného pôvodného člena tejto legendy talianskeho powermetalu – Alexa Staropoliho.
Momentálne sme pár týždňov po vydaní vášho posledného albumu Challenge the Wind, ktorý je posledným dielom ságy The Nephilim’s Empire Saga. Môžeš nám povedať, aký príbeh rozpráva a čo môžeme nájsť medzi riadkami?
AS: Teraz, keď je album vonku, pozývam všetkých, aby si sami vypočuli hudbu a prečítali si aj texty. Giacomo odviedol fantastickú prácu so slovami, o ktorých mám vždy pocit, že by som o nich nemal hovoriť. V tomto priestore by to muselo byť príliš krátke a jednoduché.
Ako by si opísal album z hudobného hľadiska?
Epický, zmysluplný a zábavný, magický a hlboký, energický a silný.
Viem, že táto otázka je trochu klišé, ale aká je z celého albumu tvoja najobľúbenejšia pieseň a prečo?
AS: Každá skladba je pre mňa výnimočná, nemožno vymenovať jednu na úkor ostatných. Som si ale istý, že „Mastered By The Dark“ bude naživo dobre fungovať.
Ukončili ste ďalšiu ságu, ďalšiu kapitolu v histórii kapely. Aký bol vplyv The Nephilim’s Empire Saga na Rhapsody of Fire a ako sa kapela vyvinula počas tejto kapitoly?
AS: Táto sága ale ešte nekončí. Pred jej uzavretím bude ešte jeden alebo dva albumy. Tento nový príbeh mal veľmi pekný dopad na našich fanúšikov, napriek tomu, že je trochu vzdialený epickým príbehom z minulosti. Chceli sme niečo nové a svieže, no zároveň sme chceli stále zachovať hudobný štýl a samozrejme rozprávať fantasy príbehy.
História kapely je dosť turbulentná – od niekoľkých zmien v zostave k paralelným kapelám s (takmer) rovnakým názvom a rôznymi skladateľmi – ako to ovplyvnilo hudbu, ktorú robíte a koľko odkazu pôvodnej kapely si stále nesiete so súčasnou zostavou a najnovším albumom?
AS: Túto kapelu som spoluzakladal ešte ako tínedžer, pracoval som a obetoval som pre ňu väčšinu svojho života a venoval som svoj čas jej rozvoju, takže odkaz, ktorý nosím, teraz patrí mne, reprezentuje ma. S mojím zázemím, mojím hudobným prístupom, mojimi skúsenosťami ako skladateľ, aranžér a producent pokračujem v tom, čo ma najviac baví, je to jednoduché. Samozrejme, nebolo ľahké prejsť cez všetky tie ťažkosti, ktoré nás stretli na našej ceste, ale vždy sme boli odhodlaní tvrdo pracovať a dosiahnuť naše ciele. Ťažkosti sú veľkým stimulom. Založili sme Rhapsody Of Fire a ukázali sme svetu, čo sme schopní niesť pochodeň a veríme, že teraz je celkom jasné, kde sme.
Internet je zaplavený vtipmi na tému „Iba génius ako Taylor Swift dokáže vytvoriť 10-minútovú skladbu“, pričom odkazuje na metalové skladby, ktoré sú oveľa dlhšie. Vydali ste album s najdlhšou skladbou celej ságy The Nephilim’s Empire Saga, ktorá trvá 16 minút 12 sekúnd „Vanquished by Shadows”. Akú úlohu majú v dnešnej dobe dlhé piesne, keď pozornosť bežnej populácie trvá len niekoľko sekúnd?
AS: Priznávam, som zo starej školy. Je mi to jedno a nikdy som sa nestaral o klišé a o to, čo je alebo nie v kurze. V hudbe robím to, čo milujem a môže to byť 4-minútová skladba alebo 20-minútový epos. Ak niekoho pozornosť trvá len niekoľko sekúnd, neriešim to, ale ľutujem toho blázna.
Teraz, keď je celá sága hotová, prichádza turné na propagáciu nového albumu. Plánujete nejaké špeciálne vystúpenia alebo špeciálny setlist, ktorý prejde celou ságou? Ako plánujete sprostredkovať komplexný zážitok zo ságy živému publiku?
AS: Ako som už povedal, nie je toešte dokončené, máme ešte niekoľko oblastí, ktoré musíme preskúmať a sme z toho veľmi nadšení. Album “The Eight Mountain” sme už hrali úplne celý a bol to skvelý zážitok pre nás aj pre našich fanúšikov, ale toto môžeš to urobiť len raz za čas. Našou tendenciou je teraz ponúkať čo najviac rôznych skladieb, pravdepodobne zo všetkých našich albumov.
Uvidíme sa na dvoch koncertoch koncom jesene tohto roku na Slovensku. Čo by sme mali očakávať na živých vystúpeniach?
AS: Skvelú energiu, ktorú môžeme zdieľať s našimi fanúšikmi po celej Európe! Tešíme sa na návrat.
Nie je to vaša prvá šou u nás – aké máš spomienky na Slovensko z predchádzajúcich návštev?
AS: Slovenskí fanúšikovia majú takú surovú energiu a skutočný prístup. Svoju priazeň posúvajú kapele naozaj s veľkým nadšením, čo znamená, že dostávame aj veľa pitia zadarmo!
Ako vyzerá vaša rutina na turné, keď je program tak nabitý ako na vašom nadchádzajúcom európskom turné? Väčšinou máte koncerty jeden za druhým s pár dňami voľna, hlavne na cestovanie na dlhšie vzdialenosti.
AS: Často hráme veľa koncertov za sebou. Je to dobre organizovaný stroj. Prvé dni sú vždy o niečo ťažšie, ale nadšenie všetko zmyje, sme nažhavení a pripravení na ďalšiu show. Je to úžasná práca, byť hudobníkom a mať svojich vlastných fanúšikov je požehnaním, takže sa vždy veľmi tešíme, že môžeme vyraziť na turné.
Takmer každá kapela má tú jednu skladbu, ktorú musí hrať naživo, pretože je to ich skvelý hit, ale hudobníci jej majú plné zuby. O akú pesničku ide v tvojom prípade a prečo?
AS: Našťastie neznášam žiadnu z piesní, ktoré hráme. Je to privilégium byť hudobníkom a mať zásluhy na skladbách ako Dawn Of Victory, Emerald Sword a mnohých ďalších. Iste, tieto piesne hráme odjakživa, ale výmena energie medzi kapelou a našimi fanúšikmi je tak skvelá, vzájomná radosť je zakaždým ohromujúca a zakončiť koncert týmto spôsobom je fantastické.
The one band that comes to mind of the most as first when you think of the word metal and Italy is the band RHAPSODY OF FIRE, which recently released the new album Challenge the Wind. We managed to interview the co-founder and currently the only original member of this legend of Italian power metal – Alex Staropoli.
We are currently few weeks after release of your latest album Challenge the Wind, that is final piece of your The Nephilim’s Empire Saga. Can you tell us the story it´s telling and what you could find in between the lines?
AS: Now that the album is out I invite everyone to listen the music of course and to read the lyrics as well. Giacomo did a fantastic work with the words that I always feel that I shouldn’t be talking about, it would have to be too short and simplistic within this space.
How would you describe the album in terms of music?
AS: Epic, meaningful and entertaining, magic and profound, energetic and powerful.
I know this question is kind of cliché, but out of the whole album, what is your most favorite song and why?
AS: Every song is special to me, impossible to name one at the expense of the others. I’m sure that “Mastered By The Dark” will work well live.
You ended one more saga, one more chapter in the history of the band. What was the impact of The Nephilim’s Empire Saga on the Rhapsody of Fire and how does the band evolved during this chapter?
AS: This saga is not over. There will be one or two more albums before concluding it. This new story had a very nice impact on our fans, despite it’s a bit distant from the epic tales of the past. We wanted something new and fresh, still maintaining the musical style and narrate fantasy stories of course.
The history of the band is quite turbulent – from few lineup changes to parallel bands with (almost) same name and various composers – how does this impacted on the music you are doing and how much legacy of original band are you still carrying with current lineup and latest album?
AS: I co-found this band while still being a teenager, I worked and sacrificed most of my life for it and I have dedicated my time to develop it, so the legacy that I’m carrying it belongs to me now, it represent me. With my background, my musical approach, my experience as composer, arranger and producer, I keep going doing what I love the most, simple as that. Of course it was not easy to carry on through all the many difficulties on our path, but we always were determined to work hard and accomplish our goals. Difficulties are a great stimulus. We have established Rhapsody Of Fire and showed to the world what we are capable of carrying the torch and we believe it’s pretty clear now where we stand.
Internet is flooded with jokes on “Only genius like Taylor Swift can make 10 minutes long song” while referencing to metal songs that are much longer. You released album with longest song in whole The Nephilim’s Empire Saga – 16 minutes 12 seconds long “Vanquished by Shadows. What role does long songs have nowadays when attention span lasts only few seconds?
AS: I’m old school I admit. I don’t care and I never cared about cliches and what’s hot or not. I do what I love in music and it can be a 4 minutes song or a 20 minutes suite. If your attention span last only a few seconds that’s fine with me, but I just pity the fool..
Now that the whole Saga is finished – there is tour coming to promote the new album. Are you planning some special shows or special setlist to go thru whole saga? How are you planning to deliver complex experience of the Saga to the live audience?
AS: As I said earlier it is not finished, we have some more areas to explore and we are very excited about it. We already played “The Eighth Mountain” entirely once, and it was a great experience for us and for our fans, but you can do that just once in a while. Our tendency right now is to offer as much different songs as possible, likely from all our albums.
We are gonna see you on two shows late Fall this year in Slovakia. What should we expect to experience on the live performances?
AS: Great energy to share with our fans all over Europe! We are looking forward to be back.
This is not your first show in our country – what are your memories of Slovakia from your previous visits?
AS: Slovakian fans have this raw energy and genuine approach. They really show their appreciation to the band with a lot of enthusiasm and that means we get a lot of free drinks a well!
How does your tour routine look like when the schedule is as tight as on your upcoming European tour? You mostly have back-to-back shows with only few days off mainly for travelling longer distances.
AS: We often play many shows in a row. It’s a well organized machine. First days are always a bit harder but the enthusiasm washes away everything, we get fired up and ready for the next show. This is an amazing job, being a musician and having your own fans it’s a blessing, so we are always super excited to start a tour.
Almost every band have this one song they have to play live because it´s their great hit, but you just hate the song. What song is that in your case and why?
AS: Luckily I don’t hate any of the songs we play. It’s a privilege to be a musician and being able to have credit for songs like Dawn Of Victory, Emerald Sword and many more. Sure, we are playing those songs since forever but the exchange of energy between the band and our fans is so great, the mutual enjoyment is overwhelming every time, and to finish up a concert this way it’s fantastic.
