Najfrancúzskejšia z austrálskych hard rockových kapiel je späť so svojim novým albumom Glory or Nothing. OVERDRIVERS s novým albumom stúpajú na kvalite, ukazujú svoju temnejšiu stránku singlom Meet the Monster a dobývajú srdcia hardrockových fanúšikov po celom svete. My sme sa rozhodli porozprávať s gitaristom kapely Anthonym Clayom, aby sme zistili niečo viac o novom albume, plánoch aj o tom, aký vplyv mal Alexi Laiho na francúzsky hard rock.
Ste najfrancúzskejšia z austrálskych hard rockových kapiel. Mohol by si to trochu rozvinúť? Nie je to niečo, čo by sme počuli často. Úprimne, ak aj uvažujem, nevie ma napadnúť iná francúzska austrálska hardrocková kapela.
Áno, vieš, nie je veľa fancúzskych austrálslkych kapiel. Myslíme tým ale to, že hráme Austrálsky hard rock, ale sme z Francúzska, takže nás to trochu definuje. Keď sme začali písať skladby, nechceli sme hrať AC/DC, ale naša hudba znela ako AC/DC. Nebol to cieľ, ale tak to proste vypálilo.
Aktuálne vydávate nový album s názvom Glory or Nothing. To znie trocha ako prehlásenie. Máte tým na mysli, že s týmto albumom dávate do stávky všetko?
Nie. Tento názov sme si vybrali, lebo Glory, sláva, je slovo veľkého významu. Čo ale hovoríme je, že chceme hrať rock a robíme všetko preto, aby sme boli čo najlepší. A ak by sme nespravili všetko pre to, aby sme boli najlepší, môžeme sa na to rovno vykašľať. Tak to ale je vo všetkom, daj do toho všetko alebo to nerob vôbec. To je myšlienka, z ktorej vziľiel názov albumu.
Keď vidím obal albumu, prvé čo ma napadá je, že ste čerpali inšpiráciu v Tenacious D, aspoň taký to vo mne budí dojem. Aké ešte inšpirácie máte pri tvorení hudby okrem hard rocku a možno Steel panther, keď pozrieme na staršie albumy?
Áno, v kapele máme kopec vplyvov. Nepočúvame len AC/DC. Počúvame toho oveľa viac.
Napríklad Airbourne, chápem.
(Smiech) Presne. Ale chápeš ma, počúvame napríklad aj klasickú hudbu. Aj na tomto albume je kopec vplyvov. Napríklad posledná skladba, ktorá sa volá In Fear of Blood and Fire – jej koniec je inšpirovaný hudbou, ktorú som počul v starom filme o Batmanovi. Chcel som oživiť emóciu tohto druhu hudby. Máme množstvo vecí, ktorými sa inšpirujeme. Vieš, na predošlom albume sme zneli ako Austrálska hard rocková kapela. Ale pri tvorbe tohto albumu sme sa neobmedzovali. Chceli sme proste vytvoriť hudbu, ktorá sa nám páči. Bez konkrétnej škatuľky, tento album je proste kompiláciou toho, čo sa nám v kapele páči. A inšpiráciou pre obal albumu bol film s Arnoldom Schwarzneggerom, Posledný akčný hrdina. Všetci sme tak trocha fanúšikmi toho filmu.
Keď sa bavíme o novom albume, čo od neho vlastne môžeme očakávať po hudobnej stránke?
Pre fanúšikov Overdrivers je tam skladba, ktorá znie ako austrálsky hard rock. Ale povedal by som, že na tomto albume je aj množstvo tvrdších, možno až heavy metalových skladieb. Napríklad text spomínanej In Fear of Blood, and Fire bol inšpirovaný našim spevákom Adrianom, ktorý ako vojak slúžil v Afganistane. Cieľom bolo napísať skladbu pre jeho bratov v zbrani.
To ale znie skvele. To je fakt pekné gesto. Nie len, že vydávate nový album, pred nedávnom ste vypustili nový singel Meet the Monsters, ktorému sa dostalo celkom pozitívnej kritiky. V tlačovej správe ste mali informáciu, že skladba vznikla z vašej láske k hororom. Aké sú tvoje tri najobľúbenejšie knihy alebo filmy v žánri a prečo?
Páči sa mi Evil Dead III. Videl si to? Je to o chlapovi, čo má motorovú pílu namiesto ruky. Potom tu je Piatok 13-teho. Musím ale povedať, že je to dosť ťažká otázka, lebo ja mám fakt rád staré filmy, vieš. Ale je tu jeden starý francúzsky horor z 80-tych rokov, ktorý sa volá Le Lac des Morts Vivants.
Je to otrasný, fakt zlý film s nacistickými zombie z jazera v malej dedinke vo Francúzsku. Je to šialené. Ale je to vždy ohromná sranda pozerať takéto filmy s kamošmi, chápeš.
To znie rozhodne ako niečo, čo by sme si so ženou pozreli. Obaja máme radi divné horory. Vy ale momentálne prinášate svoju hudbu aj mimo Francúzska. Hrali ste nejaké koncerty v Holandsku, Špenielsku, pokiaľ viem, máte nejaké koncerty vo Švajčiarsku- Ale čo zvyšok Európy? Kedy by sme vás mohli vidieť my tu vo východnejšej časti Európy?
Určite by sme chceli hrať v Nemecku. Vidíme na Spotify, že tam máme väčšinu poslucháčov. Takže cieľom je momentálne dostať sa ku koncertom v Nemecku.
Momentálne máme kopec koncertov vo Francúzsku a Španielsku, ale chceli by sme viac hrať v Nemecku.
Čo je z tvojho pohľadu kľúčovým faktorom pre to, aby ste sa na živých koncertoch dostali ľuďom tak povediac pod kožu?
Naša hudba je postavená na gitarových riffoch so silnejšou rytmickou gitarou. Chceme na koncertoch prinášať kopec energie, silné predstavenie a našim cieľom je proste, aby sa ľudia skvele bavili pri pive.
Keď sme sa bavili o tom, odkiaľ čerpáš inšpiráciu – máš nejaké špecifické prostredie, ktoré potrebuješ pri tvorbe hudby? Niečo špecifické?
Nie, nie. Inšpirácia prichádza odvšadiaľ. Niekedy pozerám telku a mám pri sebe gitaru a niečo sa objaví. Niekedy počujem vtip a napíšem o ňom pieseň. Niekedy sedím na hajzli a odrazu príde inšpirácia. Prichádza odkiaľkoľvek.
Ty osobne si fanúšikom black metalu, teda aspoň čo som počul. Na druhej strane hráš hard n heavy. Nemáš v sebe akýsi vnútorný boj dvoch žánrov, ktoré sa prezentujú ako jediný skutočný reprezentant tvrdej hudby?
Chápem, ale nie. Vieš, je tu kopec kapiel, ktoré vo mne vyvolávajú emócie. Pre mňa to nie je problém, aby som mal rád tak rozdielne žánre hudby. Niekedy mi to práve prináša nečakané vplyvy do mojej hudby.
Takže do svojej hudby prinášaš vplyvy black metalu?
Áno. Napríklad, aj keď to nie je z black metalu, ale pri Meet the Monster som sa inšpiroval Children of Bodom. A v deň keď som napísal sólo k Glory or Nothing, umrel Alexi Laiho. Takže pri tomto sóle som sa inšpiroval jeho tvorbou a napísal som ho na jeho štýl.
To je pekné. Si hrdým členom Gangu Flying V. Prečo Flying V? Čo ju robí nadradenou iným gitarám?
Vieš, keď sme začínali s kapelou, bol som s Adrienom, ktorý spieva a hrá sprievodnú gitaru. Boli sme fanúšikovia AC/DC – ja som mal Gibson SG ako Angus a Adrien mal Gretsch ako Malcolm Youngovci. Len chápeš .. hrali sme hudbu ako AC/DC a mali sme gitary ako AC/DC. Proste toho bolo trocha moc. Tak sme sa rozhodli pre vlastný image. A hľadal som gitaru, ktorá by nabola spätá so žiadnym konkrétnym gitaristom. Tak som si vybral V. A tú gitaru proste milujem. Viac za tým nie je.
Okay. Je tu jedna vec, ktorá ma trocha ruší, ale možno je to len môj problém. Všimol som si, že vaša stránka je len po francúzsky. Nebrzdí vás to možno trocha pred tým, aby vás mohlo lepšie spoznať aj zahraničné publikum?
Asi hej, Pracujeme na tom. Je to projekt, vieš.
Okrem hororov a superhrdinov, čo je očividné podľa mikiny (Anthony mal mikinu s logom Batmana), kto si v civilnom živote? Aký je tvoj civilný job, hobby, vieš, čo mám na mysli. Niečo, pri čom by ťa nečakane mohli ľudia stretnúť.
Som veľkým nadšencom histórie. Študoval som archeológiu. Som fanúšikom starých vecí. U mňa doma to vyzerá ako v múzeu. A občas sa teda venujem detektoringu. Ale teda dosť často hrám na gitare. To sú moje dve najväčšie hobby – hudba a história.
Okay. Keď hovoríš o detektoringu – čo je tvoj najcenenejší objav?
Našiel som Luger P08, nmeeckú pištoľ z druhej svetovej vojny. Našiel som ho tu nedaleko v bunkri.
Wau. Si z pas-de-Calais, ak sa nemýlim. Predpokladám, že podobných vecí je tam hromada, čo?
Áno, je tu veľa bunkrov z druhej svetovej vojny. Mali sme v okolí Pas-de-Calais dosť odpaľovacích zariadení na V2. Sme totiž blízko Londýna.
Frenchiest of the Australian hard rock bands is back with it´s new record Glory or Nothing. OVERDRIVERS are stepping up their game with a new album that showed their darker side with the single Meet the Monster and conquered the hearts of hard rock fans all over the world. We decided to talk with guitar player Anthony Clay in order to find a little more about new album, their plans and even influence of Alexi Laiho on French Hard rock.
You are the Frenchiest of the Australian hard rock bands. Can you somehow elaborate on that, because that’s not really something that we hear a lot. Honestly, I can’t even think of another Frenchy Australian hard rock band.
Yeah. There are not a lot of Australian French bands, you know. What we mean by that is that we like to play Australian rock, but we come from France, so that’s what defines us. When we started to write songs, we didn’t want to play AC/DC, but the music that we created at this time sounded like AC/DC, so it wasn’t a goal, but that’s the music that we created.
Right now we are releasing the new album. It’s called Glory or Nothing. The title sounds like a statement, a little bit. Does it mean that you go all in with the new album, or what do you want to say with the title?
No. We chose this title because we like this title, you know, and Glory is a big word. What we want to say is that when we rock, we do all we can to do the best, you know. And if we don’t do the best for us, we don’t have to do anything. If you don’t do your best at doing your thing, you know, that’s the idea behind this title.
Seeing the cover, there is definitely some inspiration in Tenacious D, or at least that’s my first impression, to be honest. What are the other inspirations for you when you write the music, other than also hard rock and maybe Steel Panther when we look at the older albums?
Yeah. In the band, there are a lot of influences. We don’t only listen to AC/DC, we listen to a lot of different kinds of music, you know.
Airborne as well, yeah.
(Laughter) Exactly. But you know, classical music too, you know. And there are some influences in this album. For example, in the last song of the album, in the song called In Fear, Blood and Fire, the end of the song is composed as music I heard in an old Batman movie, you know. I wanted to recreate the emotion of this kind of music. So there are a lot of influences. In the previous album, we wanted to sound like an Australian rock band, you know. But creating the new album, now we only wanted to create music that we like. So without style, you know what I mean, this is just to have a compilation of what we like in the band. And the inspiration for the cover was a movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Last Action Hero. Because we are big fans of this movie, you know.
Speaking of the new album sounds like the music you like, you’re playing, what you really feel, what can we expect from the album? Can you somehow describe the music? What can we look forward to?
Yeah. For the fans of Overdrivers who have followed the band since the beginning, there is a song that sounds like Australian rock. But in this album, there are a lot of heavy metal songs, I would say. For the lyrics, for example, the last song, In Fear of Blood and Fire, was inspired by the singer, Adrian, who was a soldier and fought in Afghanistan. The goal was to create a song for his brothers in arms, you know.
Man, that sounds wonderful. I love it. That’s really cool. Also, not only that you are releasing the new album, a few days ago, I think, you released the single, Meet the Monsters, which you actually got pretty good reactions from critics and you’ve got a statement in the press release that the song and the music video was born from your love of horror. What are your top three movies or books in the genre and why?
So I like Evil Dead III. Have you seen this movie? It’s about guy with chainsaw for a hand. It’s Friday the 13th. I say that’s a tough question because I love a lot of old movies, you know. And in France, there are a lot of horror movies from the 80s like it’s called Le Lac des Morts Vivants.
It’s a bad movie, an awful movie, with a Nazi zombie from a lake in a tiny village of France, you know. That’s crazy. But it’s really fun to see a movie like that when you are with friends, you know.
Okay. Definitely something we would love to watch with my wife. We both are into weird and crazy horror movies. So, you are taking your music currently to the stages outside of France. You played some gigs in the Netherlands, in Spain. You even got the tour, full tour in Spain. And as far as I know, there are some shows in Switzerland. What about the rest of Europe? When will we in Eastern Europe be able to see your shows?
We would like to play in Germany, you know. But because when you know, we can see on Spotify our listeners and the large majority of our listeners comes from Germany, you know. And the goal is to find gigs in Germany at this time, you know.
For now, we have a lot of gigs in France, in Spain, as you said. But we would like to play more in Germany.
Okay. So, from your point of view, when it comes to the live shows, what is the key to the heart of the fans? What do you need to deliver to, you know, just grab them and go?
You know, our music is based on guitar riffs and with a bigger rhythm guitar, you know. We want to have a gig with a lot of energy, a lot of power, and the goal is to have the audience have a good time drinking beer during the gig, and that’s the goal.
So, where does your inspiration really come from? Do you need some specific environment or some… I don’t know. Something really odd that you need to…
No, no. The inspiration comes from everywhere, you know. Sometimes I’m just watching TV with my acoustic guitar and I find something. Sometimes I just hear a joke and I write a song about this joke, you know. Sometimes I’m on my toilet and I have inspiration. It comes from everywhere.
You personally, you are a big fan of black metal from what I heard. And you are playing hard and heavy and isn’t there some inner struggle between those two genres that both somehow are crowning themselves as the only one true representative of the heavy music, you know?
Yeah. No, but you know I have a lot of bands that give me emotions, you know. For me, it’s not contradictory to love opposite kinds of music, you know, and sometimes it allows me to put some influences in my music.
So, you are sometimes putting the influences from black metal to your music?
Yeah, yeah. For example, not specifically from black metal, but for example, their songs, for example, Meet the Monsters was created with an inspiration from Children of Bodom, you know? And when I wrote the guitar solo on Glory or Nothing, it was the day that Alexi Laio died. So, I was creating a solo, so I decided to make a solo in the style of Alexi Laio in this song, you know.
Okay, that’s really nice. You are a proud member of the Flying V gang. What makes Flying V superior to any other guitar?
You know, when I started the band, it was with Adrien, who is a rhythm guitarist and singer. And we were fans of AC/DC, and I had a Gibson SG, like Angus, and Adrien had a Gretsch, like Malcolm Young, you know. But you know, we played a style like AC/DC, and we had guitars like AC/DC, so it was too much for us. So, we decided to create our own image. So, I looked for a guitar with… which wasn’t associated with a specific guitarist, you know. So, that’s why I chose The V. And I love this guitar, you know. So, that’s why.
Okay. Okay. The one thing that I’m not sure if it bugs me, but it’s just, you know, I noticed that your whole official page is French only. Isn’t that somehow holding you back a little bit from the foreign audience?
Yeah. We will translate this soon. It’s a project.
Okay. So, man, other than the horrors we already mentioned, this and other types of guitar than Mighty Flying V, and the superheroes, which is obvious, looking on a sweatshirt (Anthony´s wearing Batman sweatshirt). Who are you in civilian life? Daily job, hobbies, stuff like that. Some unexpected places where people can meet you outside of the music.
I’m a big fan of history, you know. And I studied archaeology. And so, yes, I’m a big fan of old stuff. And in my house, you know, it’s like a museum because there is a lot of stuff. And that’s a true passion, you know. Sometimes, I do some metal detecting, you know. But I play a lot of guitar, too. That’s my two hobbies, music and history.
Okay. You are doing the metal detector stuff. What is your proudest find?
I found a Luger P08, which is a German gun from World War II. I found it near a bunker.
Okay. Okay. You’re from Pas-de-Calais, so there might be a lot of stuff like that, huh?
Yes. There’s a lot of old stuff from World War II, like bunkers, you know. We are near London. There were a lot of launching sites for German V2 around Pas-de-Calais.
